2022 West Nile virus first detected in mosquitoes in Bernalillo County — City of Albuquerque

The City of Albuquerque Department of Environmental Health and Bernalío County Department of Planning and Development Services today announced that the first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes of 2022 were identified through routine mosquito monitoring throughout the city and in unincorporated areas of Bernalío County. announced that
The city and county operate a joint mosquito control program aimed at reducing the population of mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus and protecting public health. Integrated pest management techniques are being used to reduce mosquito breeding, and residents throughout Bernalillo County are encouraged to call 311 to report any puddle or mosquito problems.
“West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes will be present in the area until there is sufficient frost, so we urge people to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites throughout the rest of the season.” Dr. Mark DiMena, Deputy Director, City Department of Environmental Health.
Common West Nile virus symptoms are fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Rarely, West Nile virus causes meningitis or encephalitis. If anyone has these symptoms, they should see a healthcare provider. People over the age of 60 are most at risk of serious illness from West Nile virus.
To minimize mosquito bites and prevent exposure to mosquito-borne diseases:
- Use repellent on exposed skin and clothing when outdoors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends repellents with proven effectiveness. This includes DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or those containing IR3535 for skin and permethrin for clothing. Always follow label directions when using repellents.
- Remove old tires and other receptacles where mosquitoes lay their eggs, and regularly change the water in bird baths, water pools, and pet water bowls. Make sure the rain barrel is tightly sieved.
- For flood irrigation, ensure that water does not stagnate for more than a few days
- If you don’t have a screen, keep your windows and doors closed. If you leave the doors and windows of your home open, make sure the screens are tight and do not have holes.
Residents throughout Albuquerque and Bernalillo County can call 311 to report mosquito breeding sites or request mosquito control.
