LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WDRB) — Is your child at risk of monkeypox? Health officials said the risk is low.
As children return to school, there are concerns that a monkeypox epidemic could affect them, but Norton Health officials said it’s fairly rare.
Kentucky has no cases of pediatric monkeypox, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Indiana he has two recorded cases.
Over 31,000 monkeypox cases have been confirmed in the United States. According to Norton, he has only 102 of his children under the age of 17.
Infection is possible, but doctors say nothing to worry about for now. However, it is up to parents to stay healthy to protect their children.
“The most important thing parents can do to protect their children is to protect themselves because the few children affected by this outbreak are actually adults with monkeypox, often adults in the household. “We’re exposed to it,” said Chris Bryant, an infectious disease specialist at Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
Some monkeypox rashes resemble other skin conditions. Doctors said that if these rashes didn’t get worse or crusted over, it probably wasn’t monkeypox.
At this time, children under the age of 18 are not eligible for the monkeypox vaccine.
