Bird flu kills 700 black vultures, animal sanctuary closed
Locust Grove, Georgia — Bird flu has killed hundreds of wild black vultures in a Georgia reserve that houses more than 1,500 other animals.
No other birds on Noah’s Ark have tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain or displayed symptoms, officials at the reserve told news outlets.
The virus outbreak has killed 40 million chickens and turkeys and about 2,000 wild birds this year. Wild birds include more than 240 black vultures and nearly 220 bald eagles, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even seals died from it.
Officials said on Saturday that initial tests were said to indicate that the black vultures inhabiting Noah’s Ark had died from a highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. State officials were notified when an unusual number of dead vultures were found on August 13, according to a statement released to the press.
At least 700 black vultures have died, Alison Hedgekos, Noah’s Ark animal control manager, told WXIA-TV. Officials have euthanized 20 to 30 birds, she said.
“All of our chickens were euthanized yesterday and so were our turkeys and guinea pigs,” she said.
The reserve is home to more than 500 birds, according to the agency. According to the reserve’s website, it includes an ostrich, an emu, a peacock, two sandhill cranes, a parrot and an eagle owl.
Noah’s Ark is located in Locust Grove, about 30 miles southeast of Atlanta. More than 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of the area where hundreds of birds died or were euthanized in his backyard earlier this year, confirming most of his 15 previously reported deaths from the virus. it was done.
