West Nile virus detected in Twin Falls County

Twin Falls, Idaho — A pest expert at the Twin Falls County Pest Control District has identified West Nile virus-carrying mosquitoes in Magic Valley.

A sample was taken on Saturday and tested positive on Monday. Mosquitoes were drawn from just north of Filer by the Snake River. The South Central Public Health District is urging people to take precautions to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV).

“Mosquitoes are primarily seen in the morning around sunrise and around sunset, so it’s important to avoid standing water,” said Jacob Ward of the South Central Public Health District.

Ward also said wearing long-sleeved shirts and using Deet-specific repellents are good ways to prevent WNV infection. Brian Simper, manager of the Twin Falls County Pest Control District, said he can help anyone trying to keep mosquito populations under control.

“Even if you don’t contact us, please drain standing water if you can. We’d love to help investigate. If we can treat the area, we can prevent mosquitoes from hatching,” Simper said. .

WNV is endemic to Idaho and occurs each summer. Simper said the timing could affect spreads.

“It’s much better to find them near the end of August than in early June, so we’re in good shape for that,” Simper said. “At 40 degrees or below, mosquitoes go into hibernation and start looking for sugar instead of sucking blood, which reduces the number of mosquito bites.”

Even if you get WNV from a bite, over 70% of cases are asymptomatic, with only 16 total cases in Idaho last year.

To prevent the expansion of the West Nile, authorities Recommended by the Idaho Department of Health and Human Services Take the following precautions:

  • Wear a repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (all EPA-approved repellents) according to the label.
  • Remove standing water around your home – this is where mosquitoes like to breed.
  • Cover your skin from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
