Monkeypox vaccine maker and WHO sign Latin America deal

The Danish maker of the only licensed monkeypox vaccine said Wednesday it had signed a deal with the World Health Organization (WHO) to expedite distribution in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Vaccine supplies are expected to start in September,” Bayern Nordic said in a statement, adding that the company is looking to ramp up production to meet high global demand for the vaccine.

Bavarian Nordic said the agreement with the WHO’s regional office for the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), “will ensure equitable access to the company’s monkeypox vaccine for Latin America and the Caribbean.”

A spike in monkeypox infections has been reported since early May outside endemic countries in Africa.

WHO declared the situation an international public health emergency on 23 July, and approximately 40,000 cases have now been reported.
