Second monkeypox strain linked to travel to West Africa confirmed in UK
The second monkeypox The strain has been confirmed in the UK and has been linked to travel to West Africa.
However, there is no evidence to suggest that this individual case is related in any way to the current outbreak.
One person was admitted with the strain to the Seriously Infectious Diseases (HCID) Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Merseyside, according to the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Contact tracing is currently underway to see if there are any more related cases.
As of Friday, no further cases have been confirmed.
UKHSA Incident Director Dr Sophia Maki said the risk to the general public was “very low”.
she said:
“The UKHSA and NHS have well-established and robust infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infections which are strictly followed and pose a very low risk to the general public.
“Remind everyone planning to travel to West and Central Africa to be aware of monkeypox symptoms and to call 911 if they have symptoms upon returning home.”
Since the outbreak began, there have been more than 3,000 cases of the original monkeypox variant in the UK, most of these confirmed among gay and bisexual men in the UK.
Monkeypox is related to smallpox Cases are usually found in West and Central Africa, with the virus unlikely to spread elsewhere.
First discovered in monkeys, the disease is usually mild but can lead to serious illness in some cases.
UK receives about 100,000 There have been reports that the country is poised to run out of smallpox vaccine doses to treat monkeypox.
The vaccine is expected to arrive in the UK in September. This was after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced that there were only about 5,000 doses of Jab left.
UKHSA announced that 150,000 doses had been procured but only 50,000 doses had been delivered due to supply problems.

What are the symptoms?
It usually takes 5 to 21 days for the first symptoms of infection to appear.
The first symptoms of monkeypox are:

exhaustion
The rash often appears on the face before it spreads, usually 1 to 5 days after the first symptoms.
Sometimes confused with chickenpox, the rash begins as raised patches that develop into small, fluid-filled blisters. The blisters eventually form scabs that then slough off.
Most people recover within a few weeks.
