A new study of schoolchildren conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center reports that the majority of children with asthma also experience allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever. Symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, and sinus pressure, which can exacerbate asthma.The results of this study were published in the Journal of Asthma.
A study conducted by Jessica Stern, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, found that children with both asthma and hay fever had poorer asthma outcomes.

According to Dr. Jessica Stern, “Throughout our study, many of the children who did not report symptom improvement had allergic rhinitis in addition to asthma, and these children had more asthma symptoms. and used more rescue medications and missed more school days compared to children without allergic rhinitis.” Especially nasal sprays and recommended antihistamines. Fewer than half of children with hay fever who received adequate treatment for their symptoms, including medication, did not see an asthma or allergy specialist.
Stern added, “This is important because it highlights the gap between care and the treatment needed. This is primarily for those who are perceived as Black or Latino or hail from less resourced communities. It may contribute to the disparities in asthma outcomes seen in children.”
