SALEM Ore. (KPTV) – Public health officials confirmed Thursday that a bat found in a Salem-area home tested positive for rabies, according to Marion County Public Health.
Bats are the most common carriers of rabies in the state, with approximately 8-10% of bats tested for rabies each year positive. So far this year in Oregon he has had seven bats that have tested positive for rabies.

The main ways people can protect themselves is by ensuring all pets are vaccinated and avoiding contact with feral and wildlife. Public health officials advise extreme caution before handling bats, including using heavy gloves, a shovel, or both.
“Stay away from bats, wild animals, or other mammals exhibiting strange behavior,” health officials said. “You may see sick bats flapping on the ground or exhibiting unusual behavior. Let’s take him indoors.”
