North Carolina Begins Testing COVID-19 in Private Nursing Homes :: WRAL.com

Starting this week, North Carolina will begin testing everyone who works or lives in a private, skilled nursing facility for COVID-19.

Nursing homes are hot spots for the outbreak of COVID-19 in North Carolina and throughout the country.

The state updates its coronavirus data weekly from a “communal living environment” that includes nursing homes, home care facilities, and correctional facilities. By June 26, there were 8,605 confirmed cases of virus at these facilities, with 767 deaths out of a total of 1,362 cases. Eighty percent of people who die of the coronavirus in North Carolina are 65 or older.

“The mortality rate for people over the age of 75 is still high compared to other groups,” Cohen said. “The number of nursing homes may have declined due to an increase in non-nursing home cases, primarily as they spread across the state.”

To prevent further outbreaks, the state is working with CVS to provide more than 60,000 tests in more than 400 nursing homes throughout North Carolina.

Previously, testing was done only if the facility tested positive, but now all centers are tested.

This will allow states to identify positive cases early and better determine additional infection prevention and control measures needed to stop the spread.

All tests must be completed by 1 September, officials said.
