First monkeypox-related death announced in Indiana
Indianapolis – State announces first monkeypox-related death.
The Indiana Department of Health said monkeypox is contributing to the deaths of Indiana residents. The person had multiple other underlying health conditions. Due to privacy laws, states do not provide additional information about a person’s age or location.
“Although the number of monkeypox cases in Indiana has dropped significantly as a result of the availability of a vaccine, remember that the disease is still endemic and can cause severe illness and death. It’s important to stay safe,” said State Health Commissioner Dr. Chris Box. “Our hearts go out to this Hoosier family and we encourage anyone at risk to get vaccinated to protect themselves.”
The Department of Health announced the first probable monkeypox case in Indiana in June 2022. There have been 264 cases reported statewide, mostly in men between the ages of 18 and 39.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the same family as smallpox. Symptoms usually appear within he 21 days of exposure.
according to Centers for Disease Control and PreventionThe most common symptom of monkeypox is a pimple-like, blister-like rash. These can appear in the mouth and other parts of the body. Other symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, and fatigue.
Persons infected with monkeypox should be isolated. The illness usually lasts 2-4 weeks. From the time symptoms begin until the rash has completely healed and a new layer of skin has formed, it is contagious.
According to the CDC, monkeypox has several routes of transmission:
- Direct contact with monkeypox rashes, sores, or scabs in monkeypox patients.This is believed to be the most common way the virus spreads in the United States
- Contact with objects, fabrics (clothes, bedding, towels), and surfaces used by monkeypox patients.
- Contact with respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact or during intimate physical contact such as kissing, hugging, or sex.
- During pregnancy, the virus can pass to the fetus through the placenta.
