Lifespan suffers as REM sleep declines
Tuesday, July 07, 2020 (HealthDay News)-Deep sleep is essential for health, and too little sleep can shorten life expectancy, new research suggests.
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is when a dream occurs and your body recovers from the catastrophe of the day. Researchers report that for every 5% decrease in REM sleep, the mortality rate in elderly and middle-aged adults increases by 13% to 17%.
“Many studies have linked sleep deprivation to serious health effects. But many people either ignore the symptoms of sleep problems or don’t give them enough time to get enough sleep.” Said Senior Researcher Eileen Leary. She is a senior director of clinical research at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
“In a busy, fast-paced life, sleep can feel like a time-consuming annoyance. In this study, two independent cohorts found that lower levels of REM sleep resulted in higher mortality.” Said.
Rem said it is unclear how REM sleep is associated with mortality risk. Also, this study could not prove that poor REM causes death. It is only associated with an increased risk of premature death.
“The features of REM are not yet fully understood, but knowing that less REM is associated with higher mortality adds a piece to the puzzle,” she said.
It is still too early to make recommendations for improving REM sleep based on this study, Leary said.
“As we learn more about relationships, we can start to look at ways to optimize REM, but that’s outside the scope of this project,” she said.
In the study, Leary and her colleagues included more than 2,600 men with an average age of 76 who were followed for an average of 12 years. They were also part of another study, collecting data on approximately 1,400 men and women with an average age of 52 years, followed for an average of 21 years.
According to the researchers, REM sleep deprivation was associated with premature death from all causes and death from cardiovascular and other illnesses.
The association of REM sleep with mortality was similar in both groups.
