Mumbai scrambles to contain measles outbreak as virus kills 10 children
India’s financial capital Mumbai is witnessing a measles epidemic, with 10 deaths last month and a sharp spike in cases.
As of 24 November 2022, Mumbai has reported 252 confirmed cases.
Measles is a common infection, especially in children, that causes the body to become hot and the skin to be covered with small red spots.
Most children between the ages of 9 months and 5 years get measles.
In Mumbai, this is a significant increase over the last two years. In 2019, the city had 25 cases of measles, and in 2020, he had only nine cases reported in the year. But this year, in less than two months, he has 233 cases reported.
Mumbai is currently reporting the highest number of cases in seven hotspot regions – Dharavi, Gobandi, Kurla, Mahim, Bandra and Matunga.
“The beginning of the outbreak was marked in October when the city reported 60 cases, compared with just 25 in September this year. That’s when we decided we needed to start,” said BMC’s Executive Health Officer, Dr. Mangala Gomare.
A study reveals that the pandemic has affected children’s measles vaccinations. Nearly 20,000 children were not vaccinated against measles.
“Our research report showed that only 41% of targeted children were vaccinated. We began raising awareness in these slums and tracking children who missed them. We are also holding vaccination camps for them,” Dr. Gomare told WION.
The BMC issued a recommendation stating “In view of the measles outbreak in Mumbai, all citizens are urged to vaccinate their children aged 9 months to 5 years with measles-containing vaccines.” issued.
Immunization camps, door-to-door surveys, and awareness sessions are being held by city officials to contain the spread.
