48,500-year-old ‘zombie virus’ revived by Russian scientist

The oldest Pandoravirus, Yedma, is 48,500 years old, a record age for a frozen virus to revert to a form that can infect other living things. This breaks the previous record for his 30,000-year-old virus identified in Siberia by the same scientist in 2013.

Pandoravirus was discovered at the bottom of a lake in Yuketiaras, Yakutia, Russia, but Pandoravirus has been found everywhere, from the fur of mammoths to the intestines of Siberian wolves.

Further studies are needed to assess the level of infectivity of these unknown viruses when exposed to light, heat, oxygen and other external environmental variables.
