ABC7 News went to CVS, Walgreens, and Rite-Aid in Marin County on Tuesday and they all told the same story: clearing the shelves where children’s Tylenol is usually located, leaving only a few boxes of generic brand pain relievers. It was not.

“There is a definite shortage of over-the-counter Tylenol, pediatric ibuprofen and cold medicines,” UCSF infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Chinhong told ABC7 News. “

Shortages of these medicines occur in the so-called “triple disease”. RSV, COVID-19 (new coronavirus infectious disease) and the influenzaMarin County Public Health Director Dr. Matt Willis said COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the county have doubled in the past month. And with the flu, it’s even more dramatic. This county has one of the highest rates of influenza we’ve ever seen.

“I’ve never seen this level of flu so early in the season,” Dr. Willis said. “One in four people with flu-like symptoms who get tested at Marin actually have the flu.”

“This is the highest positivity rate we have ever seen,” he explained.

“It really speaks to the fact that when things are about to run out, we as a country are not very good at judging before we run out,” said Dr. Chinhong. No one says anyone can take something out of the stockpile because orders for certain drugs are increasing.”

“But as it’s happening this year, there are people trying to prevent this from happening,” he explained.

What if Children’s Tylenol or similar generic brands are not available until then?

“If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist. However, take the 200mg or adult form and, depending on your child’s size, mix, crush, mix with chocolate milk, etc. There are methods that can also be used,” he said.

“But if your kids are small, you’ll definitely want to talk to your pharmacist, but there are many tricks that can help parents when official Tylenol for Kids isn’t available.

Chin-Hong says another tip for children with low fever is to use cool towels or cold compresses or fans.

“It’s what hospitals use for heatstroke, for example, and it works by evaporating to lower the body temperature,” he said. “These are minor interventions that don’t require drugs if the fever is mild.”

“But again, if you have a high fever and it doesn’t improve with some of these interventions, don’t be afraid to bring your child.
