Symptoms to watch out for this winter
(KGET) — With colds, flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulating this winter, it can be difficult to know which symptoms mean which illness.

RSV symptoms usually overlap with those of colds, flu and Covid, Chadha said. The most common symptoms of RSV are coughing, sneezing, fever, runny nose and wheezing, which he lasts from 2 to 8 days.
Flu is unique, with high fevers and body aches, Chadha said, and Covid symptoms often include stomach upsets such as headaches and diarrhea.
“RSV is unique to premature infants and young children, and wheezing is common,” said Chadha. “If you have shortness of breath or if your child or baby is not eating as well and seems lethargic and unplayful, contact your healthcare provider for further recommendations.”
Chadha says most people are exposed to RSV by the age of two, so healthy adults with strong immune systems are safe. But there are some groups that are more vulnerable.
Chadha said RSV can cause serious illness in infants and children, especially those born prematurely.
Similarly, people over the age of 65 and people with weakened immune systems, such as heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes, are at increased risk of developing illness from RSV.

Chada added that the immune system is slightly compromised during pregnancy, so expectant mothers should treat the disease with caution and contact their healthcare provider if they start showing symptoms. .
But only about 1% of people are hospitalized for bronchiolitis or pneumonia caused by RSV, Chadha said.
There is no vaccine for RSV, but Chada said ways to protect yourself and your children include getting a flu shot or getting the latest COVID-19 booster shot.
As the holiday gatherings approached, Chadha also recommended wearing masks in crowded places, using public hygiene stations, and washing hands frequently.
