COVID-19, flu spike notes in Weekly Health Report. 42 hospitalized
Amarillo Public Health is urging more people to get vaccinated as respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 and influenza continue to rise in the region, with COVID-19 cases reaching 1,500. and nearly 2,400 flu-related infections. Diseases reported this week.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8 out of 10 reported Covid deaths in the United States were in adults over the age of 65. It’s our best defense against Covid,” said a news release issued this week.
“Potter and Randall counties are not only seeing an increase in Covid cases, they are also seeing a significant increase in influenza A cases,” Dr. Todd Bell of Amarillo Public Health said in a release. “In some cases, some people have tested positive for both Covid and the flu and are at serious risk. The following people are especially important to get a new booster that protects them from their current stock:
- Over 50 years old.
- Residents of long-term care facilities.
- People with certain underlying medical conditions.

“The data support vaccines and boosters,” said Dr. Bell. “In fact, studies have shown that people over the age of 12 who received the latest bivalent booster had a three times lower risk of becoming Covid-positive compared to those who had not been vaccinated.”
According to the Department of Health, hundreds of millions of people in the United States have been safely vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine under the strictest safety oversight in U.S. history. Influenza updates
The Department of Health is also sharing weekly flu reports as respiratory illnesses are on the rise in the Texas Panhandle. This report is being produced by all local health care providers who voluntarily report influenza to the Amarillo Public Health Department in Potter and Randall counties.

In the week of 12 December, there were 1,166 influenza A, 29 influenza B and 916 flu-like symptoms.
There were 277 cases classified as ‘undifferentiated’ for a week total of 2,388.
COVID-19 update
The department’s weekly COVID-19 update identified 1,564 cases as active, with an increase of 2 new deaths and 510 new COVID-19 cases.
According to the notification card, the 510 new COVID-19 cases correspond to a seven-day average of 73 new cases, with a seven-day positive rate of 12%.
This brings the total number of cases in Potter and Randall counties to 86,151 and the total death toll to 1,314 since the pandemic began in March 2020, according to the report. A total of 82,120 recoveries have been reported in the region, as posted on the APHD site.
Since the start of the pandemic, the total number of cases in Potter County has risen to 41,168, with 761 active, 39,631 recoveries, and 776 virus-related deaths.
Since the start of the pandemic, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Randall County has risen to 43,830, with 803 active, 42,489 recoveries, and 538 virus-related deaths.
The report card includes the latest data from BSA Health System, Northwest Texas Healthcare System and Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center. His community levels of COVID-19 remained low in Potter and Randall counties, according to Centers for Disease Control criteria.

The next mobile vaccine clinic will be on Saturday, December 17 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the 54th Corps Auxiliary and Salvation Army.

The City of Amarillo’s Department of Public Health, 850 Martin Road, is offering new COVID bivalent boosters and COVID-19 vaccines to everyone ages 5 and older. They also offer other adult and child vaccines to those who qualify.
