Merck’s COVID Pill Does Not Reduce Hospitalization, Mortality in Many Vaccinated Adults – Study | Mighty 790 KFGO

LONDON (Reuters) – Merck & Co Inc’s COVID antiviral drug molnupiravir hastens recovery but does not reduce hospitalization or mortality in adults who have received high-risk vaccines, detailed data from a large study show. Shown on Thursday.
The drug, which prevents viruses from replicating, has brought about $5 billion in sales to U.S. pharmaceutical companies in the first three quarters of 2022.
Preliminary data from a study conducted in the winter of 2021-2022, when Omicron variants were dominant, were published in October. As a result, in Australia, for example, doctors are already considering limiting the use of mornupiravir.
The latest results are more detailed and peer-reviewed.
The study, called PANORAMIC, compared oral medications with standard care alone in people aged 50 and older or 18 and older with underlying medical conditions. They were sick with confirmed COVID within five days in a community setting.
When Merck first tested molnupiravir, it was found to be 30% effective in reducing hospitalizations, but in unvaccinated patients.
The latest study, led by researchers at the University of Oxford, found that nearly all of the more than 25,000 patients in the study had received at least three doses of the vaccine.
These results indicate that the protection of the vaccine is very strong, with no clear benefit from the drug in terms of further reducing hospitalizations and deaths.
However, the drug was effective in reducing viral load and helped speed up the patient’s recovery by about four days, researchers estimated based on study data.
There may be situations in which molnupiravir is useful. In a stressed healthcare system, for example, it could be used to help key workers get back to work faster, says Chris Butler, a co-lead researcher at the University of Oxford.
Ultimately, however, these benefits need to be weighed against the cost of the drug, added Paul Little, co-principal investigator at the University of Southampton. The course is estimated to cost hundreds of pounds.
“Right now, I think we have to tell the general public, including those who are slightly at higher risk, not to use this drug,” Little said.
