State health officials urge residents to get screened for cervical cancer

(CBS Detroit) – January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services encourages Michigan residents to get regular cancer screenings.

According to MDHHS, Michigan’s new incidence and death rates from cervical cancer have remained low but stable since 2011.

“Approximately 75% of cervical cancer diagnoses statewide and 60% of cervical cancer deaths occur among women ages 30 to 64,” MDHHS officials said.

In addition to this, officials say black non-Hispanic residents have higher mortality rates from late-stage cervical and cervical cancer than white non-Hispanic residents.

“In the early stages, cervical cancer may not cause any symptoms,” said Dr. Bagdasarian, chief medical officer of MDHHS. “Regular cervical cancer screening is the most effective way to catch cervical cancer early, when it is most treatable, and the first step is to talk to your healthcare provider.”

Health officials say they recommend screening for cervical cancer starting at age 21.

Women ages 21-29: Pap smear every 3 years
For women aged 30 to 65 years: Pap smear every 3 years, high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) laboratory test every 5 years, or Pap smear and HPV simultaneous test every 5 years.

Two MDHHS programs help eligible people get free cancer screenings and health checks.

of Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BC3NP): Provides free breast and cervical cancer screening services to low-income women.
of Wise Woman Program: Helping individuals understand risk factors for chronic diseases and making healthy lifestyle choices, with free health checks for all. After your checkup, you can choose to work with a health coach or join a support program like Weight Watchers or Take off Pounds Sensively.
