NICE recommends that more people should take statins to prevent heart attacks and strokes
New draft guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that more people can consider using statins to reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke.
Previously, NICE recommended that people with a 10% or greater risk of developing a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, be given statins over the next 10 years. This guidance will not change.
This was done after an independent panel updating current guidance reviewed new evidence on statins’ side effects and safety.

The panel agreed that heart attacks and strokes would drop significantly if more people took statins. We estimate that for every 1,000 people with a 5% risk over the next 10 years, about 20 will not develop heart disease or stroke because they are taking statins.
