Should I be worried about gel nail polish safety?
(Bloomberg) — Gel manicure may not be the self-care treatment that it seems. Lamps used to dry nail polish emit ultraviolet light that can cause DNA mutations often associated with cancer, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego tested mouse and human cells in the lab, exposed them to lamps, and published the study in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
Lamps that cure long-lasting gel polishes after application use a spectrum of UVA radiation that is generally considered safe. However, after exposing the cultures to the lamp for multiple 20-minute sessions, the scientist observed cell death and DNA damage.
While the study provides no evidence of cancer risk, it may prompt more research into the dangers of the increasingly popular gel nail polish because nail polish lasts longer.
This evidence joins previous findings that radiation emitted by lamps can cause hand cancer, and that polish dryers may increase the risk of early skin cancer in the same way as tanning beds. The scientist writes that it “strongly suggests” that
