Health officials said there was no risk to the public after an overseas traveler died of rabies in New Zealand.
Te Whatu Ora said New Zealand had the first case of rabies detected.
“Sadly, an international traveler died last week from the disease, but this person did not pose a health risk to the general public while in New Zealand,” Te Fatu Ora said today. said in a statement.
“The illness began overseas and was subsequently diagnosed in New Zealand.
“The person was notified of suspected rabies when first admitted to hospital in early March and was managed with full infection control measures when first diagnosed at Auckland City Hospital and Whangarei Hospital. I did.”

“But we are not concerned about rabies transmission in New Zealand,” she added.

Te Whatu Ora recommends that kiwis be vaccinated against rabies when traveling to countries where rabies is endemic.
“All travelers should avoid contact with animals, especially dogs, in countries with rabies.
“If you are bitten by a rabid animal, you should seek treatment as soon as possible.”
Rabies can be transmitted through the saliva of infected animals. Without treatment, it is usually fatal. Te Fatu Ora warned.
