By the end of summer, overdose antidotes will be available over-the-counter and can be sold at convenience stores and grocery stores. Two 4-milligram doses are provided just in case.
Tina Beten, clinical supervisor at the Jackie Nitschke Center, said special training is required to administer Narcan prior to FDA approval.
“The FDA is aware that it is user-friendly enough, especially that the nasal spray does not need to be administered by a medical professional. It makes a big difference because it saves some lives,” Baeten said.
Nearly every state in the United States allows pharmacists or other qualified organizations to provide Narcan to people at risk of overdose without a personal prescription, but it is not available over-the-counter. This will make access even easier.
Baeten said the decision could reduce the stigma surrounding addiction.
“One of the things it does is it actually creates awareness, which is inherently assessing the lives of people with addiction problems. It’s really… hard to sympathize with it until you really understand its effects on the brain,” Beten said.
Baeten said the next step is to educate the public and spread information about the dangers of addiction and the value of treating moments of vulnerability.
