Experts warn Bay Area residents to prepare for incoming mosquitoes, deadly virus as warmer weather approaches

CONTRA COSTA CO., California (KGO) — Following the wet weather, many parts of the Bay Area may have an impending mosquito surge.
The tiny tadpole-like swimmers are mosquito larvae. You’re likely to find them in planters, children’s toys, backyard fountains, and rainwater-filled bird baths.

“Throw away any containers that might hold water. These containers can harbor mosquito eggs, so throw them out and scrub them,” says Pearce.
Not only is the West Nile virus an annual concern, but last August, Aedes aegypti, a vector for Zika and dengue, was discovered in Martinez. So patrols keep an eye out before sending trucks to spray neighborhoods.
As for those with ponds or standing water on their property, Pearce said: Make sure the area is good for fish and then offer fish to residents.
Mosquitoes come out when it gets warm. Residents are reminded that even a little water can swarm mosquitoes.
