LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and April 11th is World Parkinson’s Day. A Lincoln organization restores confidence and exercise to patients and caregivers dealing with Parkinson’s disease.
People with Parkinson’s disease often suffer from symptoms such as muscle stiffness, tremors, and memory problems. A Lincoln woman helps her patients with dance and movement.
Ruth Davidson Hahn brought Parkinson’s Dance to Lincoln in 2014, welcoming Parkinson’s patients, their caregivers, or spouses to join classes at the Nebraska Ballet Theater. Parkinson’s disease often affects balance, so participants begin with a sitting warm-up, then work in a ballet bar and experience different styles of dance, including ballet, tap, and lyrical. If the dancer is feeling confident, they can move to the middle of the floor and work on the choreography or dance.

Exercise, stimulation, and exercise-focused classes can help Parkinson’s symptoms. After class, dancers can get up from their chairs more easily, be more talkative, stand up, and stand a little more upright, Hahn said.
“There is body and space awareness, connecting with the earth, connecting with the sky, just expanding yourself,” Hahn said. “Thus, all training is inconsistent with what the disease may present with symptoms.”
Classes also work together on dance choreography to help develop motor skills such as memory and balance.
