A woman shares her experience participating in a triple-negative breast cancer vaccine trial
Triple-negative breast cancer is the most aggressive and deadly disease. Two years ago, researchers began the first-of-its-kind trial to test a vaccine that could help prevent this type of breast cancer. And now, the very first participants share why they weren’t afraid to participate.
Jennifer Davis, who is participating in a clinical trial of a breast cancer vaccine, said, “It was a shock because, as far as I know, no one on my mother’s side or my father’s side had breast cancer.
Davis has been on a rollercoaster since being diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2018.
“The first thing that prompted me to go to the doctor was to find a lump in my left breast,” Davis said.
A mother of three children sought care at the Cleveland Clinic.
“She had very aggressive and typical chemotherapy,” said Dr. Megan Kruse, a breast oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
When Davis finished treatment, she was offered the opportunity to participate in the hospital’s breast cancer vaccine trial, which prevents triple-negative breast cancer by having the immune system attack the tumor and keep it from growing. The purpose is that.
“After diagnosing and treating a patient, there is a period covered by this study. Thankfully, Jen is still within that period and was the first patient to actually enroll in the trial and be treated with the vaccine. Kruse said.
So far, Davis has no serious complications. She also remains cancer-free.

The first phase of the trial tested the vaccine in women already diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, and the next phase began earlier this year, testing the vaccine in women without cancer but at high risk of breast cancer.
