CINCINNATI (WXIX/Gray News) – Officials say the number of dead dogs is rising as the deadly virus continues to spread around animal shelters in Ohio.
Twenty-five dogs have been “humanely euthanized” due to progression of canine distemper virus, according to officials at Cincinnati Animal Care. They said the disease was detected in two stray dogs taken to a shelter in early April.
Since then, Cincinnati Animal Care has restricted intake and adoption.
Megan Colville, head of rescue operations at the shelter, said: WXIX It is a matter of life and death.
“We’ve seen over 80 dogs still recovering in the last week since we restricted their intake, and that’s not sustainable,” she said. If we continue this pace at the same rate, more dogs will get sick, and without the help of the general public, we will lose healthy dogs.”
The shelter said it will continue to test dogs daily to reduce the number of sick animals in its care.
“We are still testing daily. Dogs that test positive but are asymptomatic or experiencing mild symptoms are being taken to another off-site facility that we hope to start operating within the next week. We’re moving,” Colville explained.
Dogs that test negative for antibodies are allowed for adoption or foster care and pose no threat to the community or other animals, according to the shelter.
New dog intakes are now housed separately, but officials say they are not suitable for long-term dog care.
The shelter said it continues to work with CDV experts and said community shelters are important during a virus crisis like this.
“If you find a stray dog and it’s safe, keep it nearby for as long as possible,” the shelter said. “Not only does this reduce the risk of exposure to the virus, [but it also] Increases the chances of animals being reunited with their families. The farther away an animal is from where it was found, the more chances he has of being reunited with his family drops from a maximum of 90% to 17%. ”
CDV is fortunately not contagious from dogs to humans or from dogs to cats, experts say.
