Fox 2 (WJBK) – “This is a very common fungus,” said Dr. Matthew Sims of Corewell Health East. “Sometimes it looks like mold, sometimes it looks like yeast.”

And the fungus is deadly for some people. A paper mill contractor on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula recently died from it. After a fungus caused an outbreak at the Escanaba business.

“And with so many people getting infected, you have to think there’s a very large amount of these spores somewhere in the paper mill,” added Sims.

Luckily, infections are treatable, but if you have a weakened immune system, they are more difficult to treat.

“The important thing to know is that it doesn’t spread from person to person. You breathe in those spores through the environment,” he said.

Officials say the source of the fungus is still unknown.

“It’s usually associated with soil or rotting vegetation, and paper is still made from trees,” Sims said. “The CDC and locals are investigating to find the exact source. I am convinced.”

The CDC is also concerned that another fungus called Candida auris is resistant to treatment and spreads rapidly.

Sims, the director of infectious disease research, was complicit in the rise.

“We know how much this is really increasing, how much better technology there is to detect it, and we know it exists and there are potential problems, so we’re looking at it closely. I’ll look into it,’ he said.

There is some good news as doctors remain vigilant.

“Corewell Health East hasn’t had a case like this for quite some time,” said Sims.

But doctors are sounding alarm bells for nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

“And this is where it’s seen in high numbers,” said Sims.

Although the numbers seem to be increasing, most people are not affected by Candida auris.

“This is not something the average person should care about,” Sims said.
