Colorado Ripesto is positive for gland plague

Morrison, Colorado (KDVR) – A health authority in a county in Colorado warns residents after squirrels test positive for gland plague.
Animals were found in the town of Morrison, about 17 miles southwest of Denver.
This is the first positive case of plague in Jefferson County this year, health officials said.
Plague can spread to humans or other animals through direct contact, including bites, or bites from infected fleas and is caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis.
The Jefferson County Department of Public Health said that cats are particularly susceptible to plague and can die if not treated immediately with antibiotics. Dogs have a lower risk, but they can pick up and carry infected fleas.
Symptoms of human plague include high fever, chills, headache, nausea, development of extreme pain, and swelling of lymph nodes, which occur within 2-7 days after exposure. It can be effectively treated with antibiotics during early diagnosis.
As long as precautions are taken, the risk of plague is very low.
Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) recommended that residents take the following precautions:
- Eliminate access to all food sources, shelters and wildlife throughout the house.
- Do not feed wild animals.
- Keep trash and litter-free gardens to reduce wildlife habitat.
- People and pets should avoid contact with illnesses, dead wild animals and rodents.
- Be careful when working with sick pets. Ask your vet for your sick pet.
- Talk to your veterinarian about getting rid of fleas and ticks on your pet.
- Prevents pets from roaming outside the home, preying on wildlife and bringing the disease home.
