Researchers find key to rapid testing for Lyme disease by studying patients with lingering symptoms

Some people with Lyme disease develop symptoms long after treatment, and scientists are trying to figure out why. Their research could also allow doctors to test for Lyme disease more quickly.

James Weger didn’t even notice the tick bite. His knee started to swell and he could not bend it well. His pain and swelling were getting worse.

“It looks like it’s inflated,” Weger said. “My knee was really huge.”

Weger went to the doctor and was tested for Lyme disease. Sure enough, he had this disease, probably caused by a very small tick. He was put on antibiotics and his doctor removed some of the fluid from his swollen knee. Almost no pain and swelling.

In others, the effects persist for months or even years.

“Even if the infection appears to have cleared up, symptoms can follow,” said Brandon Jutras, an associate professor of biochemistry at Virginia Tech and the Frallin Institute for Life Sciences.

He and his research team have identified a highly unusual molecule that persists in some Lyme disease patients.

“We know that the bacterium that causes Lyme disease has specific molecules that are thought to be involved in arthritis,” said Mekayla McLoon, a PhD student on the team.

And testing for that molecule could also provide a quicker way to determine if you have Lyme disease in the first place.

The Jutras team is now working on a rapid, at-home test that can detect whether someone has Lyme disease within hours of being infected, weeks before doctors can identify it.

Montgomery County and other parts of Virginia are hot spots for Lyme disease. Jutras advises wearing light clothes if you’re going hiking or camping, as they’re more susceptible to ticks. If you have pets, check them when they enter the room. Also, wash and dry your clothes after entering the house, as mites cannot withstand dryers.
