Act Fast: June Is Stroke Awareness Month
Strokes are on the rise in Canada. A recent study by the Heart & Stroke Foundation found that more than 100,000 strokes occur annually (roughly one every five minutes), and nearly 900,000 Canadians live with long-term disability from the effects of stroke. It became clear that there is June is Stroke Awareness Month in Canada, a campaign created by the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation to educate Canadians about the importance of fighting heart disease and stroke. The good news is that nearly 80% of strokes are preventable, and even when a stroke does occur, there are steps you can take to reduce its severity.
What is Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood flow to any part of the brain is suddenly cut off, damaging cells. Effects depend on the area of the brain damaged and the amount of damage. There are three types of stroke to watch out for:
Ischemic stroke: The most common type of stroke caused by a blockage or blood clot in a blood vessel in the brain. Blockage may be caused by plaque build-up within the artery.
Hemorrhagic stroke: It occurs when an artery in the brain ruptures, blocking blood flow and causing damage to the brain. High blood pressure is a common cause of this type of stroke.
Transient ischemic attack (TIA): Also known as a mini-stroke or warning stroke, this disease is caused by a small blood clot that temporarily blocks an artery. Although symptoms are temporary, a TIA can be a warning sign of something more serious.
How to spot signs of stroke
Stroke symptoms usually appear suddenly and without warning and must be addressed immediately. It takes only a few minutes for brain cells to start dying, but proper medical care reduces the risk of injury. If you think someone might be having a stroke, remembering the FAST test can make a big difference.
F – Face: Are their faces droopy? Have them look at you with a smile to see if it’s normal.
A – Arm: can they raise their arms?
S – Speech: Is their speech slurred or confused?
T – Time: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
In addition to the FAST method, there are other less common signs of stroke, including:
- sudden severe headache
- Blurred vision or double vision
- Numbness, usually on one side of the body
- loss of balance or dizziness
How to prevent stroke
Nearly 80% of strokes are preventable by making healthy choices and managing risk factors. So while some risk factors, such as family history, genetics, and age, cannot be changed, there are many things you can do to reduce your chances of having a stroke. Simple steps like reducing stress in your life, eating a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables, being physically active, limiting your alcohol intake, and quitting smoking can all help.
