Laredo Health Department Advises Public on Potential Fungal Meningitis

Laredo, Texas (KGNS) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging people who have had surgery, including epidural liposuction, in Matamoros in 2023 to seek medical attention for diagnosis. Outbreak of fungal meningitis among Texans.
Fungal meningitis is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and sensitivity to light. It is not contagious and cannot be passed from person to person. Although Laredo has no confirmed cases, the health department is urging everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect their health and well-being. Health Director Dr. Richard Chamberlain said, “There is certainly one person under investigation who is not considered an infected person, but who may have visited either of these two clinics in Matamoros. If there are others in the area, please call 795-4951 and we will connect you to our epidemiology team for further information. Order.”
As of June 2, 2023, there are 149 Texas residents who have not shown symptoms but are being tested, according to the state health department. There are seven suspected cases who are symptomatic but have not yet had test results. There are also 10 cases in which test results are likely to suggest meningitis.
There is one confirmed case in which the fungus was detected in the sample. Three died from complications from the disease.
