MDH reports first mpox case for 2023
The state has confirmed its first case of mpox in 2023.
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) announced Friday that it confirmed two adults with mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in Hennepin County this week.
The MDH said the number of mpox cases is expected to rise nationwide during the summer due to increased gatherings and travel. The ministry said it is working with local health care providers and community partners to raise awareness about the importance of vaccines, how to access them and what symptoms to watch out for.
Last year, Minnesota detected 234 mpox cases, with the last case occurring in November.
The virus is transmitted primarily through rashes, scabs and prolonged skin contact with bodily fluids, disproportionately affecting gay and bisexual men, health officials said.
Luckily, according to MDH, there are vaccines that have been shown to reduce the likelihood of infection and prevent the risk of serious illness.
“The JYNNEOS vaccine is an important tool for preventing mpox infection, especially after two doses as recommended,” said Jane Griffiths, Chief Epidemiologist for Surveillance at MDH. “Minnesota has a large supply of vaccines and we recommend that people at high risk get both.”
Early testing and treatment can prevent further infection, so it’s a good idea to see your doctor right away if you develop symptoms of mpox.
