Millions of COVID-19 patients still lose their sense of smell and taste, Mass Eye and Year study finds
Many patients who lost their sense of smell and taste due to COVID-19 still haven’t fully recovered, according to a new study by Eye and Year in Massachusetts.

The research team reported that about 60% of study participants infected with the new coronavirus experienced loss of smell, and about 58% experienced loss of taste.
The study found that about 72% of patients had a complete sense of smell, but 24% only partially recovered, and more than 3% did not.
Similarly, about 76% of people who experienced loss of taste due to COVID-19 had full recovery, 20% had only partial recovery, and more than 2% had no recovery at all.
Researchers estimated that about 28 million Americans potentially experience a diminished sense of smell after being infected with COVID-19.
Bhattacharya said one of the motivations for the study was patients who lost 50 pounds due to the novel coronavirus-related loss of smell.
“The patient hadn’t eaten and was feeling very sick and very depressed because he had lost his sense of smell,” Bhattacharya said. “When you hear about the loss of smell due to COVID-19, most people think that their sense of smell has returned and they are doing well.

The study also found a correlation between the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and loss of smell and taste. As the severity of symptoms increased, so did the percentage of patients who lost their sense of smell and taste.
