Calming Hopes for New Alzheimer’s Disease Treatments

Scottsdale (3TV/CBS 5) — The FDA on Thursday is poised to approve the first drug proven to slow the decline of Alzheimer’s disease, but Arizona has the fastest rate of Alzheimer’s increase in the country. A family in Arizona spoke with one who is embracing new hopes while some doctors are tempering expectations.
“My grandfather had this disease when I was a daughter,” said Tammy Wadina. “He was my uncle then, but now he’s my father.”
Her father Denise is currently undergoing memory therapy. “I lost her mother a few months ago and now in a way I feel like I lost her father,” she said. She added that the disease is devastating, inexcusable, incurable, and devastating to people’s memories.
“He doesn’t remember my mother. They were married for 54 years,” Wadina said. “It’s scary. I look at my father blankly and he doesn’t understand what I’m saying.”
Researchers at Arizona State University are working to learn more about memory care for people with Alzheimer’s disease.
The FDA is poised to approve lecanemab, an antibody that targets a substance called amyloid produced in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.
“We want a very calm response to this,” said Dr. Richard Caselli, who has been treating Alzheimer’s patients for 35 years. He explained that the new drug is controversial and that studies have shown modest results, but in some cases dangerous side effects such as swelling of the brain and cerebral hemorrhages. Doctors said this is not a magic pill and should be used on a case-by-case basis.
For some people the risk is not worth the small reward. “They don’t solve the problem,” says Caselli. But he was skeptical, but also said the approval was a big step forward for a much-needed treatment. “I think it’s a small step forward. I don’t think it’s the last time I’ve heard of this,” he said.
That ray of hope is what Wadina relies on. “It’s emotional. I hope someone can avoid this experience,” she said.
