Alameda County Jail: Coronavirus Outbreak Continues
The number of cases of coronavirus in Dublin-Santa Rita prison more than doubled in 24 hours and the total number of prisoners infected with the virus reached 101.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office announced that another 55 prisoners had tested positive on Friday. On Wednesday morning, the prison had six positive inmates, but by Thursday an additional 40 were positive. Friday is the largest group of inmates infected by the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.
Sergeant Alameda County Sheriff Spokesman said the latest cluster is contained in Housing Unit 22. Ray Kelly. According to Kelly, most of the inmates in Unit 22 are prisoners of moderate security.
“The building is completely independent,” he said on Friday. “But again, all you need is one who can infect others.”
All new positive inmates are asymptomatic. That is, there were no regular signs of the COVID-19 virus. The prison is being tested proactively because of the outbreak.
“I will continue to do as many tests as I can,” Kelly said. The Sheriff’s Office will also perform “contact tracking” to determine how the new cluster was published.
As of Friday, Santa Rita prison had a total of 1,844 inmates.
All inmates should wear a mask whenever they leave the cell/living area. According to Kelley, this was previously not needed and was recently decided by talking to public health officials.
The sheriff’s office is in the process of shooting an educational video with the new policy shown to prisoners, Kelly said.
Friday’s new numbers now bring the total number of infected prisoners to 169 since the pandemic began in March. No prisoners died of the virus, according to the sheriff’s office, and generally all prisoners had mild to moderate symptoms.
Gilbert Martinez is one of the inmates who tested positive Wednesday, he said Thursday in an interview with the newspaper. He worked in the prison kitchen alongside others and third-party vendor Aramark.
He said the prison integrated laundry and kitchen workers on July 9 in one residential unit with bunk beds. Shortly thereafter, four more were positive until one prisoner tested positive and four more were notified Wednesday night of being positive.
At least 42 other staff or contractors working in prison are also testing positive for viruses. According to Kelly, one COVID-19 lieutenant is in crisis, but it is unclear where the virus was transmitted.
