Keep an eye out for ticks as warmer temperatures increase outdoor activity
Imagine looking down while hiking on a hot summer day and seeing bugs burrowing into your skin. It is painless but can be very dangerous.
“Most people won’t even know they’ve been bitten by a tick,” said San Luis Obispo County Health Officer Dr. Penny Borenstein.
Small creatures can carry disease. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, according to the CDC.
Although not common on the Central Coast, the more time spent outdoors, the greater the risk of infection.
“We have two to three cases of Lyme disease each year,” Dr. Borenstein said.
“From a physician’s perspective, symptoms vary from patient to patient and there is a great deal of overlap with other illnesses,” said Dr. Scott Byshev, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center Emergency Room Physician.
Dr. Bischoff says he often sees patients with embedded ticks, but it is possible to remove them yourself.
“Try to grab it with tweezers and pull lightly, making sure you don’t tear off any part,” he said.
Ticks prefer to live in grassy, bushy or wooded areas.
Precautions should be taken to avoid ticks, but they should not interfere with daily life.
Wearing long pants and a shirt can help, says Dr. Borenstein, and it’s important to check yourself when you return from a hike or walk. He also provides tick repellent spray.
Even if you suspect Lyme disease, you may not get a positive test for several weeks.
“The most important thing to know is that you need to be on your body for at least 24 hours to be infected,” said Dr. Byshev.
“Alternatively, if you have tell-tale signs, such as a rash with a clear center and red surroundings, that’s a sign of Lyme disease and should be treated before you test positive,” says Dr. Borenstein.
According to the CDC, tick exposure can occur year-round, but ticks are most active during the warmer months.
The CDC also estimates that as many as 476,000 people in the United States can get Lyme disease each year.
