Dengue fever case surge does not overburden medical systems, health news and top stories
Kenneth Mack, director of health at the Ministry of Health, said yesterday that the surge in dengue cases over the last few months has not unduly burdened Singapore’s healthcare system.
Associate professor Mack added that while the number of people going to fever, clinics and emergency departments is increasing, tests are needed to check for dengue, but the increase is “still manageable.” ..
“The majority of dengue cases do not require inpatient treatment and can be safely managed outpatient,” he said at a virtual press conference. “For this reason, our hospital does not have the undue burden of having to accommodate many patients as a result of dengue fever.”
The surge in dengue cases is because Singapore is still working on the coronavirus outbreak.
An unprecedented outbreak of dengue fever was seen this year, and nearly 20,000 cases have occurred so far. The National Environment Agency (NEA) says total cases are expected to exceed the record high of 22,170 cases reported in 2013.
Professor Mack said dengue and Covid-19 share some common symptoms such as fever. He added that it is important for the doctor to keep this in mind and to perform the necessary tests to determine what condition the patient is in.
“Therefore, with the increasing number of dengue cases, we need to do some more testing to make sure we are dealing with.
“We’ve seen more and more inpatients and outpatients see our doctors, but in fact this didn’t really burden us at this stage. We will continue to monitor this closely. I will.”
The Department of Health is working with the NEA to eradicate local mosquito breeding grounds, he said.
With a record high of 1,733 dengue cases in the past week, it is the largest weekly dengue case ever recorded in Singapore. Last week was the sixth consecutive week, with more than 1,000 reported dengue cases each week.
The average number of infections per week in the previous year was 891 in 2014.
So far 19 people have died of dengue fever this year.
