LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A fast-spreading COVID-19 variant is sweeping across the country. JN.1 is now the most widely spread iteration of the virus.
Like most things, COVID-19 is constantly changing. These changes can sometimes allow different variants to spread more effectively.
“It may be more infectious because it changed a little bit, your body may not recognize it,” said Lexington physician, Dr. Jeff Foxx.
That’s what the CDC says is happening with JN.1.
They’ve been tracking the COVID-19 variant since September. In October, it made up less than 0.1% of all COVID cases. Now, that number has shot up to about 86%.
“Right now, JN.1 is the predominant variant. It may be a little bit more transmissible, which means people can catch it a little easier, but it doesn’t appear to cause more severe disease,” said Dr. Foxx.
The CDC says there’s no evidence that JN.1 poses an increased risk to public health relative to other variants.
However, its rapid spread means there will likely be an increase in COVID-19 cases.
“The vaccine works for this variant. It looks like it’s going to work so get vaccinated. If you’ve been around somebody you know, get tested if you need if you have symptoms, get tested,” said Dr. Foxx.
Data from the CDC shows just 11% of the U.S. population received the latest COVID-19 vaccine.
“The vaccine rate is way lower than we need it to be. The more people we get vaccinated, the less we are to spread that virus the less we are to have new mutations and therefore possibly worse disease in the future,” said Dr. Foxx.
According to the CDC, COVID-19 hospitalizations among all age groups increased by 51% over the past four weeks.
