Spring allergies may appear early this year.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – With spring-like temperatures this week, some of you may be suffering from sniffles.
Allergy season usually doesn't start until around March, but these warmer temperatures may be playing a role.
Doctors say allergy symptoms include a runny nose, itchy eyes, bloodshot eyes, sore throat and cough.
If you have asthma, you may also experience wheezing. There's not much you can do to prepare for allergy season, but there are ways to cope.
Dr. Jeff Fox, a Lexington physician, says it's okay to stay home and take your medication if pollen counts are high that day. He says if you're not sure if you have a cold or just allergies, try the allergy route first.
“I tried all the over-the-counter medications first. If you don't have a fever, don't feel sick, just have inflammation, runny nose, and itchy eyes, try the over-the-counter medications. If you think, 'Oh, I might be sick,' it might be a good idea to go to the doctor,” Dr. Fox said.
Dr. Fox says drugs like Zyrtec, Benadryl, and Flonase are good options. He cautions people to be careful not to overuse the drug.
