Service dog changes life for Somerset veteran with PTSD

BBCSpecially trained dogs are helping veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD] By relieving anxiety and flashbacks.
Charity Service Dogs UK matches rescue dogs with people in the military and emergency services to help manage PTSD.
The Somerton-based organization started with just two dogs in 2021 but now works with 13 dogs.
“If I had any fears or flashbacks during the day, she would talk to me,” said Patrick, a former soldier.

These dogs are trained to recognize stress triggers, keep anxiety at bay, and provide companionship and support as you cope with life in general.
Patrick's dog Dottie has been an invaluable support, he said.
“She pecks my leg or jumps on me to give me the first shock, and then I realize I'm actually in the front room watching TV or listening to music. ” he said.
Each animal is taught by a professional dog trainer how to observe its owner and learn 60 different commands. Bill, a Navy veteran, now provides Patch with a home and says their bond is “very strong.”
“Patch lies in bed with me at night, and when he thinks I don't like it at night, he puts his foot on my chest,” he said.
“If I have a nightmare or go back to something that happened, he wakes me up because he knows it won't do much good.”
New owners are also helping rescue dogs by providing homes for them.
Staff at Service Dogs UK center in Somerton said they had witnessed the difference dogs made in the lives of people with PTSD.
Southwest hub manager Nigel Roussel added that they strive to match the right dog with the right veteran.
“We often get calls from rescue centers saying, 'We have a special dog and we think he might be a good fit for you,'” he said. The charity is currently supporting 13 ex-servicemen and emergency workers and says it is looking forward to the future. Partnering more veterans with specially trained service dogs to address their trauma.
