TLCHD reports increase in influenza cases
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is reporting an increase in influenza-related hospitalizations in the region.
Ohio is currently classified as having “very high” influenza activity. For the week ending February 10, Ohio reported a 31% increase in outpatient visits and a 9% increase in emergency room visits compared to the previous week.
In Lucas County, the 2022-2023 flu season peaked in December. Health experts say hospitalizations due to influenza are on the rise compared to this time last year. Since the start of the current flu season, there have been 146 flu-related hospitalizations in Lucas County.
Experts say the following steps should be taken to protect yourself from the flu:
- Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- While you are sick, limit your contact with others as much as possible to prevent infecting others.
- If you have a flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has subsided.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. This is how bacteria spreads.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with influenza or other germs.
“Everyone six months of age and older should get a flu shot every year. If you haven't gotten your vaccine yet this year, it's not too late,” said Interim Health Director Shannon Jones. “When you get vaccinated, you’re not only protecting yourself, you’re also protecting your loved ones.”
