Norovirus cases on the rise in the Northeast: What you need to know
The CDC reports norovirus cases are increasing in the Northeast. Dr. Mike Cirigliano explains it all.
Philadelphia – There is a gastroenteritis epidemic, and the CDC says more positive cases are occurring in the northeastern United States.
CDC surveillance data The three-week rolling average of positive norovirus tests in the Northeastern United States is 13.4%. This is currently the highest average in the country and is further divided into the South, Midwest, and West.
FOX 29's Dr. Mike Cirigliano of UPenn's Perelman School of Medicine said an increase in norovirus cases typically occurs between November and April.
“What happens is there's inflammation in the stomach lining and intestines, and that's when you get nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and you can feel like you're really getting it,” Dr. Chirigliano said. “Be sure to wash your hands before eating and preparing food.”
Dodi Iannaco, chief nurse at Virtua Urgent Care, said cases of the stomach virus are increasing, mainly among children.

“Basically, the best thing you can do when treating at home is to drink lots of fluids,” Ianaco says. “It could be water, it could be Gatorade, it could be Pedialyte. Watch for symptoms and stay hydrated. Wash your hands before and after using the bathroom. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Cook. Check what you are eating, especially seafood, and make sure it is well-cooked before eating.
Dr. Chirigliano and Dr. Ianaco said symptoms usually resolve within a few days.
Both men recommend going to the emergency room if the fluid doesn't stop flowing, which is more likely to happen to young children and the elderly.
