Health officials explain how Vermonters can stay healthy as norovirus infections peak in the Northeast
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Data from the CDC suggests norovirus is peaking in the Northeast.
“As usual, I started feeling sick around January, and it lasted longer in February. For about two of those months, I was sick with a cold, sneezing, and a stomach problem.'' '' said the Williston resident. Jennifer Wideawake said.
Dr. Tim Leahy of UVM Medical Center says norovirus is a very common virus that comes in waves, especially during the cold winter months.
“Norovirus is usually contagious quickly, and you may feel normal, but within a few hours, you won't be able to stop vomiting,” Dr. Leahy says.
Dr. Lahey advises eating bland foods and drinking anything that contains electrolytes. The most common symptoms are fever and diarrhea.
“Norovirus is transmitted very easily through everyday life. We believe that this virus is transmitted on people's hands, on surfaces, and where they live, so it is important to understand that people live together, eat together, go to school together, etc. “We think it's easily transmitted between people who go to school,” Dr. Leahy said.
He said the effects of symptoms vary from person to person, lasting a day for some people and two to three days for others.
“Staying hydrated is very important,” Dr. Leahy says.
Wideawake was fortunate not to contract norovirus this year, but his eyes were opened when he tested positive for COVID-19.
“I've been trying to wash my hands. I've definitely noticed that I've been a bit lazy, but as soon as I got sick, I started washing my hands thoroughly every time I got home. It's definitely an improvement.''I had all my hand sanitizer in my bag, which was very helpful,'' Wideawake said.
Dr. Lahey says norovirus outbreaks are most common in dormitories and schools.
“There are several things you can do to lower your risk of infection, including frequent hand washing and cleaning surfaces where you've been sick,” Dr. Lahey said.
Dr. Lahey says the virus can cause severe illness in certain people.
“People with weakened immune systems should definitely stay away from people with acute nausea or vomiting,” Dr. Lahey says.
To protect yourself and others from norovirus, experts recommend washing your hands with soap as often as possible, washing your fruits and vegetables, staying home when sick, and not preparing food for others. It says to do so.
