The number of Mpox infections in early 2024 will almost double compared to the same period last year.
Cases of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, are on the rise in early 2024, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As of March 16, 2024, 511 mpox cases have been reported in the United States, nearly double the amount reported during the same period last year. According to the CDC:
The recent increase in the number of mpox cases is significantly different from the number of cases reported during the 2022 mpox outbreak. The number of cases has peaked at about 460 people per day during the outbreak, according to the CDC.
In May 2023, The CDC has warned that mpox could resurgence and encouraged people in high-risk groups to get vaccinated.
In October 2023, The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has resolved to recommend that up to 2 million Americans receive routine vaccination with the mpox vaccine.

The commission recommended that some gay men and health care workers, who authorities say are at high risk of contracting mpox, be routinely vaccinated with Bavarian Nordic's JYNNEOS vaccine. However, this recommendation has not yet been approved by CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen.
The vaccine is currently recommended for a more limited group of individuals, including those who may have been exposed to the virus.
In most cases, mpox is painful but not life-threatening.
Typical symptoms of mpox include rash, fever, fatigue, headache, and muscle pain.
