UNAIR anthropology professor highlights increase in dengue cases

Uni Air News – Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases are once again on the rise in Indonesia, and this trend is often observed during the rainy season. DHF is currently classified as a Special Case (KLB). KLB refers to a situation where there is a rapid increase in epidemiological disease within a specific region and time period. These KLB conditions usually indicate the beginning of an outbreak.

According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes-RI), as of March 1, 2024, approximately 160,000 DHF cases have been reported in 213 districts and cities in Indonesia. Kemenkes expects this situation to continue until April.

Assessing the current DHF KLB situation, Dr. Phil Toetik Koesbardiati, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Airlangga (UNAIR) and Penn State DFM, provided his insights. Professor Toetik said cases of DHF occur due to a variety of factors, including Indonesia's geographical location, which is a tropical country. Other factors include natural changes, weather, and climate that is beyond human control.

“When the rainy season arrives, stagnant water in flower pots, gutters, old tires, cans, bottles, plastic containers, tree holes, palm leaves, etc. often becomes a breeding ground for mosquito larvae. Pools lead to increased mosquito population density,” Professor Toetik explained.

Additionally, Professor Toetik shared tips for combating DHF in residential areas. Preventative measures include draining water storage containers and bathtubs weekly. Professor Toetik also emphasized the importance of keeping the home clean to prevent DHF.

“Water containers and bathtubs should be drained at least once a week. It is recommended that clothing not be piled up or left hanging for long periods of time. Additionally, mosquito nets can be used to prevent mosquito bites. ”, stressed the UNAIR Faculty of Social and Political Science (FISIP) lecturer.
