Dr. Sudip Saha, a cardiologist with Kaiser Permanente's Mid-Atlantic Permanente Group, said, “Episodes of anger, elation, and emotional stress have very short-term effects in terms of how blood vessels work.” Ta.
Saha said even very brief periods of stress or excitement can affect the heart, even if you rarely lose your cool.
“Due to stress, the body excretes adrenaline hormones, so-called catecholamines, which actually constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure. It's really a fight-or-flight response,” he said.
He said the new AHA study provides a more detailed picture of the short-term risks of high anger and stress, even in people who are not at high risk for heart disease.
“Even these short-term episodes can lead to traditional heart attacks, stress-related cardiomyopathy, and heartbreak syndrome,” Saha warned.
He said stress reduction exercises, mediation and focusing on what you can control are all good coping strategies.
“I think the people who will do best in the long run are the ones who can take a step back and act,” Saha told WTOP.
“We know that practicing breathing techniques can quickly lower blood pressure,” he says. “Everyone should have coping mechanisms that help them deal with situations in a way that doesn't raise their blood pressure and potentially cause problems.”
He said a focus on mental health was also a big part of this.
“These things are connected,” he reflected. “It all depends on how we react to things, especially things outside of our control.”
