BALTIMORE — Identifying a stroke isn't always easy.
May is Stroke Awareness Month, so we want you to know about the signs and symptoms to look out for.
Ten years ago, Brian Cameron suffered a stroke that left him with aphasia.
Cameron said he remembers experiencing symptoms 10 years ago, going to hospital on a Friday and being diagnosed the following Sunday.
“It was horrible. I could think clearly but my mind, my speech and my body were all paralyzed and I was in a wheelchair for six months,” Cameron said.
After suffering a stroke, he found the Disability League's Scale Aphasia Program, a place that rehabilitates people who have suffered strokes.
Scale also has a Stroke Smart program, which teaches people how to recognize and treat stroke.
To recognise stroke, the acronym “BEFAST” is used.
Balance: Loss of balance, dizziness
Eyes: Changes in vision
Face: Sagging face, severe headaches
Arms: Weakness, numbness
Speech: Difficulty speaking, confusion
Time: Call 911.
Lisa Thronberg, director of the Scale Aphasia Program, says if you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it's time to take action.
“If we can help within one to three hours, there are certain medications that can almost prevent disability, depending on the type of stroke,” Tromberg says.
The scale offers stroke patients the opportunity to regain the confidence they may have lost.
“Patience is key. People with aphasia or other communication disorders often just need a little time to form what they want to say,” Tromberg says.
The scale helps give people like Cameron a positive sense of assurance that things will work out.
Cameron continues to regain his speech skills and now serves as an active voice for the Stroke Smart program, helping other stroke survivors.
