New CDC guidelines for bringing dogs into the U.S. go into effect August 1
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently New guidelines for dogs entering the U.S. will come into effect on August 1st
According to the CDC, all dogs entering the United States must:
- Be 6 months or older
- Embeds an ISO-compliant microchip
- Appear healthy on arrival
- Have a receipt for the CDC dog import form
- Additional documentation may be required depending on where your dog has been in the six months prior to entering or returning to the U.S. and whether your dog has a current rabies vaccination in the U.S.
The new rules require vaccinations for any dogs that have been in countries where rabies is prevalent, including rescue dogs, breeders and dogs brought from owners in the United States.
“Rabies is a virus that is typically transmitted through a bite and is always fatal once it enters a mammal, dog, cat or even human,” said Lewis Budich, a veterinarian with the Niagara County SPCA.
Budich said these new guidelines need to be considered to prevent delays at the U.S. border.
“When individuals don't know the law, it can be very burdensome for people,” Budich said.
According to a USDA report, approximately 1 million dogs enter the United States each year.
Canada resident Robin Collier said she feels relieved knowing the new guidelines will keep everyone better protected.
“Going to the dog park and interacting with other dogs makes people feel a lot more comfortable with their own dog. It just adds another level of responsibility that owners have to take on,” Collier said.
