CDC warns of Salmonella outbreaks in backyard chicken flocks
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The CDC is warning about a Salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chickens.
Public health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella linked to contact with backyard chickens.
According to the CDC, 109 people in 29 states have been infected with Salmonella after touching or caring for backyard poultry, and 33 have been hospitalized. No cases have been reported in South Dakota, but cases have been reported in neighboring states. The CDC noted that the cases may not be limited to states with known cases, and the actual number of infections may be much higher than reported because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.
Salmonella spreads easily, so it's a good idea to wash your hands after touching backyard chickens or eggs, or anything where Salmonella bacteria live and roam.
