Rise in Lyme disease worries medical experts
Medical experts are concerned about the rise of Lyme disease in the area and are urging people to check themselves for ticks.
Philadelphia – Cases of Lyme disease are on the rise in the area, and health officials are urging everyone to be vigilant this summer.
More than 420 cases of Lyme disease have been reported in Chester County so far this year, according to the Health Data Bureau, and the number of cases in the area is expected to continue to rise.
“I found a deer tick on my neck the other night,” says Dr. Mike Cirigliano of the University of Pennsylvania's Perlman School of Medicine. “I see a lot of cases.”
Dr. Mike says he has recently treated about 20 patients with suspected Lyme disease. “This year we've been focusing a lot on tick-borne illnesses, so we've seen a lot of patients with rashes. The rash can appear in the groin or behind the knees. We need to do a full body scan.”
according to Pennsylvania Tick-Borne Disease DashboardChester County has the highest number of Lyme disease cases with 422 so far in 2024. Neighboring counties have seen fewer reports.
“It's common for the most populous counties to have the highest number of cases, so we tend to see more Lyme disease cases in the counties around Philadelphia and in Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located,” said Leah Lind, an epidemiologist with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
State health officials say people who spend time outdoors in grass, shrubs or wooded areas should check their clothing and bodies for ticks.
Lind continued, “We really encourage people to spend time outdoors, we know how important it is for your mental and physical health, but you can just take a few precautions, and one of those is a substance called permethrin, which you can buy at sporting goods stores like Dick's or Bass Pro Shops.”
One of the telltale signs of the tick-borne disease is a bull's eye-like rash, but it can also cause other symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and joint and body aches.
“If you're concerned you may have been exposed to a tick you need to get treatment, and you need to get treatment quickly,” Dr Mike urged.
There have been more than 11,000 cases of Lyme disease in Pennsylvania, and state health officials expect similar numbers in 2024.
